Bee Disease insurance

All full memberships now come with BDI

The minimum premium payable for Bee Diseases Insurance (BDI) by each Member is £2.00 per annum, which insures 1-3 colonies.  In return for this premium payment, compensation will be paid under certain conditions if a hive has to be destroyed to prevent the spread of disease.  It should be noted carefully that for those whose membership subscriptions have been received by the Branch treasurer by 31 March, BDI is immediately effective.

For members whose subscription has not been received by this date (new & existing members), a claim cannot be made until the colonies have been insured for at least 40 days.

Anyone joining the association or adding additional colonies after the 31st of March will come under the 40-day rule.

There is no facility to pro-rata this insurance premium if joining the Branch during the membership year.

Associate Members are NOT insured for BDI.

Additional Premiums.

It is advisable to allow for any expected increases during the season. You should be aware that under insurance may mean you are not covered and late additions/payments after the 31st of March will be subject to the “40-day rule”.

Beekeeping members can insure more colonies for the following additional premiums:

The additional premiums are:

Up to 5 colonies in total:     £1.20

Up to 10 colonies in total:   £4.70

Up to 15 colonies in total:   £7.75

Up to 20 colonies in total:   £9.50

Up to 25 colonies in total:  £11.10

Up to 30 colonies in total:  £13.60

Up to 35 colonies in total:  £16.20

Up to 39 colonies in total:  £18.10

BDI insurance becomes effective each year from the time that the member’s Branch receives his or her membership subscription and any additional BDI premium is received if before 31 March. Otherwise, 40 days must elapse after receipt of the premium by the Branch before a claim can be made.

Additional premiums can be selected on the renewal form that is sent to all existing members at the end of the membership year, renewal invites are sent out during September and October.

If you need to add more colonies later please contact the membership secretary.

For beekeepers owning 40 or more hives a different scheme, known as Scheme B, operates. This scheme is available to beekeepers that may or may not be members of a BDI member association. For further details contact the BDI Scheme B Manager. This scheme has higher levels of maximum compensation than Scheme A. These are for Scheme B, £3,500 for up to 50 colonies insured and £5,000 above 50 colonies insured
